Friday 11th February – bike ***** –Trimley Marshes including lunch by
the Orwell – sunny and still:).
With wall-to-wall sunshine and light winds forecast today we wanted to make
the most of the perfect winter weather before a week of wind starts on
Saturday! The day started well when I did my Wordle in two for the first
time, we are loving it, Mag and I are both doing it along with our two boys
which leads to loads of WhatsApp banter:) Then we both do our exercises, am
really trying to sort my foot out, then make a flask for a Bovril lunch and
set off at 11.15, a little earlier than usual. We were not sure where to go
so Mag suggested we head over to Loompit Lake near Levington with lunch on
the banks of the River Orwell followed by a bit of bird watching at Trimley
Marshes Nature Reserve which sounded a great plan:) We headed down to the
cliff top at the end of our road first just to look at the sea which was
like a mill pool with the sun sparkling off the water, just lovely, several
canoes out too! Then past the mega warehouse and out along our favourite
tree lined track coming out at Loompit Lake near Levington on the banks of
the River Orwell with the tide well out. We saw no deer in the fields today
and the Rudd in the little pond seemed to have sadly disappeared:( There
was a couple of fly fishermen in boats on the lake as we then headed up the
steep hill leading to the seat with one of the best views in Suffolk,
straight up the Orwell. There were loads of birds mainly geese and gulls,
with loads of honking from a huge flock grazing on the far side of the
river, sadly my small gear on my bike has started to slip which is a real
pain! Round Trimley lagoon where the three dead trees are, loads of mud but
no birds only a Kestrel on the power lines. Reaching the Orwell we stop at
our usual picnic spot with the river as blue as the sky, definitely my
favourite colour. We enjoy our delicious hot Bovril being entertained by a
curlew, turn stones, a red shank and several gulls watching some power boat
action with one yacht sailing in the very light airs just so pretty,
peaceful too apart from the droning container ships at Felixstowe docks:(
Well rested we continue along the river sea wall path which is very muddy
and Mag decided to walk to the winter flood bird hide. We have it all to
ourselves and are treated to the most amazing display of wildlife starting
with two marsh harriers, quickly followed by two Chinese water deer, they
are fantastic with their teddy bear ears and little fangs, they were the
first we have ever seen. One in particular grazed on the far bank of the
flood the whole time we were there, just amazing:) Also a nice number of
birds including shovellers, teal, widgeon, lapwings, starling washing,
geese, godwits with a sparrow hawk landing in the reeds close by, also two
of the normal roe deer were also present and we sat there for ages just
taking it all in, Mag even had her binoculars with her! We then started off
for home spotting two more deer, a few snowdrops too before taking Blofield
lane back to the massive warehouse with my back tire going flat, I pumped
it up a couple of times, but half a mile from home Mag suggested I take her
bike as I am not great at walking at the moment and go home to put the
kettle on, she is a star! So the perfect day, perfect winter weather,
perfect company, perfect wildlife and the learn I had for the second time
this week got two pics in the local paper, what more could you ask for!
